Delhi Court Grants Bail To Tahir Hussain In Money Laundering Case, But He Remains in Custody

Mumbai: Delhi’s Karkardooma Court has granted regular bail to former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Tahir Hussain in a money laundering case linked to the 2020 North-East Delhi riots. However, he will continue to remain in custody in connection with the larger conspiracy case related to the riots, as reported by news agency ANI.
Hussain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 6, 2020, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The court granted him bail, citing that he had already served half of the sentence in the case.
Tahir Hussain’s Election Campaign During Custody Parole
Earlier this year, in January, Hussain launched his election campaign for the 2025 Delhi Assembly polls while on custody parole. The Supreme Court had granted him six-day parole from January 29 to February 3, allowing him to campaign in Mustafabad for 12 hours daily under strict police supervision.
Within two hours of stepping out of Tihar Jail, Hussain, contesting on an AIMIM ticket, began door-to-door campaigning under heavy police presence. Accompanied by his supporters and multiple security personnel, he engaged with voters in the minority-dominated constituency.
Speaking to IANS at the time, Hussain expressed confidence in his electoral prospects despite his imprisonment. “Despite spending five years in jail, the people of Mustafabad are here to support me. It’s they who will decide my fate,” he stated. He further added, “After five years, I have had the opportunity to come out of jail, and I am very happy. When I was leaving jail, I was anxious and worried, but I am happy now because so many people came here to meet me, to see me, to catch a glimpse of me.”
Hussain emphasized that he was relying on public support rather than any political brand. “The people of Mustafabad are witnessing a son, a brother amidst them. Seeing them come in hordes makes me very happy. I fully trust them,” he remarked.
Election Outcome
Mustafabad, a constituency with a significant minority population, saw major political parties fielding Muslim candidates to consolidate votes. Hussain faced competition from Congress candidate Ali Mehdi, son of former MLA Hasan Mehdi, AAP’s Adil Ahmad Khan, a journalist-turned-politician, and BJP’s Mohan Singh Bisht, the sitting MLA from neighboring Karawal Nagar.
Despite his efforts, Hussain ultimately lost the election to BJP’s Bisht.
