Delhi Freezes At 2.4 Deg C: Coldest Day Of Season, Fog Affects Air And Rail Traffic

Kuldeep Shrivastava said that cold wave and severe cold are forecast in Delhi-NCR on Saturday

Mumbai: Officials said the coldest day of the season was recorded in Delhi, where the minimum temperature in the morning dropped to 2.4 degrees Celsius.

The mercury fell to the lowest in this season with the Safdarjung Observatory in Delhi, the reading of which is considered the official marking for the city, recording 2.4 degrees Celsius in the morning.

Other observatories recorded as follows: Palam 3.1 ° C, Lodhi Road 1.7 ° C, Aya Nagar 1.9 ° C, said a senior official of the Meteorology Department.

Due to very dense fog, zero visibility was reported in the Palam Observatory area, which makes the city’s airport a neighbour. An airport official said that four flights were diverted from Delhi airport due to dense fog on Saturday morning.

The official said the flights are operating at the airport under CAT III B conditions, which means the runway visual range (RVR) is between 50 meters and 175 meters.

Kuldeep Shrivastava said that cold wave and severe cold are forecast in Delhi-NCR on Saturday.

Since 1992, the minimum temperature at Safdarjung Observatory was 2.4 ° C on 30 December 2013 and 2.3 ° C on 11 December 1996. The all-time all-time record on 27 December 1930 is zero degrees, he said.

According to railway officials, 24 trains were running late for 2-5 hours due to poor visibility. Howrah New Delhi Purva Express delayed by five hours.

Air quality became critical again on Saturday due to falling temperatures, high humidity and low wind speeds, which allowed the accumulation of pollutants. The overall air quality index stood at 413 at 10 am.

The Meteorological Department had said on Thursday that since 1901, the region will record the second coldest December in the region due to increasing cold in Delhi-NCR.

“The average temperature in December was less than 20 ° C in 1919, 1929, 1961 and 1997,” said an India Meteorological Department official.
