Delhi Government Rejects Nirbhaya Convict’s Mukesh Singh’s Mercy Plea

Mumbai: The Delhi government on Thursday rejected his mercy petition for Mukesh Singh, a convict in the Nirbhaya case, the only remaining appeal against the death penalty, passed it to the Lieutenant Governor, who then forwarded it to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

A debate erupted in the Delhi High Court yesterday when Tihar jail officials said before the judge that the execution of the convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case could not take place under the jail’s guidelines on January 22, as a mercy petition was already Has been filed.

As per the rules, execution can take place only 14 days after the mercy petition is decided. As a result, the execution date can be postponed as the government will have to wait until the President gives his decision.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the curative petition of Vinay Sharma as well as Mukesh Singh, following which Singh decided to file a mercy petition before President Ram Nath Kovind in the Delhi High Court.
