Delhi Police Detained 459 Congress Workers, Leaders In Day 1 Protest

The party workers were protesting in support of party leader Rahul Gandhi, who appeared before the Enforcement Directorate in the National Herald money laundering case. Hundreds of Congress workers took to the streets in Delhi and several senior leaders were detained amid a massive show of strength by the party, which led a Satyagraha march against the Enforcement Directorate’s questioning of its former president Rahul Gandhi in a money-laundering probe linked to the National Herald newspaper. Also Read: Cong Leaders Surjewala, Venugopal & Others Detained Amid Protest In Delhi

The opposition party alleged that some of its leaders were attacked by the police. It hit out at the government for “not allowing” peaceful protests.

Despite not getting permission, Congress leaders sat on dharna in different parts of Delhi on Monday.

They were detained from Akbar Road, where the Congress headquarters is located, Q Point APJ Kalam Road and Man Singh Road and taken to Mandir Marg, Tughlaq Road and Fatehpur Beri police stations respectively.

However, the police said that 100 senior leaders and employees of the All India Congress Committee, whose names were to be provided in advance, were allowed to enter the party headquarters from the Akbar Road and Maulana Azad Road intersections.

Delhi Police said 15 Lok Sabha MPs Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, KC Venugopal and Mallikarjun Kharge, 11 Rajya Sabha members, five MLAs from different states and party functionaries were among the 459 detained in the New Delhi district. Not following valid instructions. To maintain law and order.

A senior police officer said that all the women Congress workers and office-bearers who were detained by the police have been released and appropriate legal action will be taken against those violating the orders imposed under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

“Complaints have been received about injuries to Congress leaders and workers during police action. But no such incident of use of force by police took place as per our knowledge and no MLC case has been reported so far,” said Sagar Preet Hooda, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order, Zone -II Delhi).

“Still, if there are allegations of some manhandling during the detention, the same will diligently be looked into for appropriate action,” he said.
