Dhoni Will Take Call On His International Future After IPL 2020 Says VVS Laxman

Mumbai: While Ravi Shastri recently in an interview said MS Dhoni’s IPL performance will decide his comeback, former Indian batsman VVS Laxman feels MS Dhoni can come back if youngsters Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson fail to make use of the opportunities that come their way in the near future.

VVS Laxman said MS Dhoni, according to him, will take a call on his international future after the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2020. The batting great added that Dhoni can be looked at if he performs well for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

38-year-old wicket-keeper batsman’s international cricket future has become a matter of intense speculation as to the World Cup-winning former captain has not played since India’s exit from World Cup 2019.

Dhoni made himself unavailable for the West Indies tour and took a sabbatical during which he trained with the Para Regiment of the Indian Army. He was also not part of India’s limited-overs squads for series against South Africa and Bangladesh.

While images of him training in Ranchi raised expectations of an early comeback, Dhoni was not named in the T20I and ODI squads for the upcoming series against West Indies at home.

“I think MS Dhoni will wait with patience to see the performance of Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson. Whenever he gets an opportunity and he will take a call after the IPL because the way I am seeing it, MS Dhoni is preparing himself for the IPL. I’m sure he will do well like he has done whenever he plays and leads CSK,” Laxman told Star Sports, as quoted by PTI.

“If both these youngsters don’t grab their opportunities, probably there is a thought that MS Dhoni can come back provided he shows that form in the IPL leading up to the World Cup.

“At the moment Rishabh Pant would be the first choice, his back up would be Sanju Samson and if both these youngsters don’t grab these opportunities then you can probably look at MS Dhoni, keeping in mind how he performs in the IPL.”

Meanwhile, Dhoni broke the silence about his international comeback at a promotional event in Mumbai on Wednesday. “January tak mat poocho (don’t ask me till January),” said Dhoni.
