Djokovic Wins Court Case To Stay In Australia, To Be Released From Detention

Mumbai: Novak Djokovic won the court case against deportation from Australia after his visa was cancelled on arrival in Melbourne.

The court ordered Djokovic to be immediately released from detention and his passport and all other personal effects are returned to him.

Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia Judge Anthony Kelly revoked Djokovic’s visa and confirmed that the twenty-time Grand Slam winner Serbian would be allowed to stay in Australia.

Djokovic was also ordered to be released from detention immediately with his passport and “personal effect”. However, the Australian government has expressed its desire to revoke the visa and retain Djokovic again.

Following the judge’s ruling, public prosecutor Christopher Tran informed the court that the ministers for Immigration, Citizenship, Foreign Services and Multicultural Affairs would consider “whether to exercise a personal power of cancellation.”

In response, Judge Anthony Kelly clarified that his intention was to state whether to proceed with the legal process. Notably, Djokovic was granted a medical exemption to enter Australia and compete at the Australian Open because he recently tested positive for COVID-19, court documents published on Saturday showed.

Vaccine-skeptic Djokovic arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday after the organizers of the Australian Open granted a vaccine-sceptic medical exemption.

However, after the nine-time Australian Open champion landed, he spent eight hours under house arrest at Melbourne airport, where he unsuccessfully pleaded his case before the border authorities.
