Droupadi Murmu Set To Become President Of India As She Crosses Halfway Mark

 

Mumbai: Droupadi Murmu is set to become the 15th President of India after crossing the 50% mark of total valid votes at the end of the third round of counting.

Hailing from Odisha’s Mayurbhanj, she has served as the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.

Her victory is expected to be officially declared after all votes are counted, but she has already received 5,77,777 votes, more than half of the total valid votes cast in July 18 election.

Returning Officer PC Modi announced that Murmu has already received more than 53 per cent of the total valid votes. Counting of votes is currently underway for 10 states and union territories.

In each round of counting so far, he has got more than two-thirds of the votes. Sources told news agency PTI that 17 MPs from opposition parties have cross-voted in their support.

Murmu had an edge over presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha after the second round of counting – which includes votes from 10 states. Earlier all MPs had votes.

Murmu, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’ nominee, wParty’xscceed President Ram Nath Kovind.

Murmu was widely expected to be that person, given the numbers in the camp of the BJP and its allies. She will become the first member of a tribal community (and only the second woman) to become president of India.
