EC Directs Parties Not To Use Plastic, Polythene In Poll Materials

Mumbai: In the wake of abolishing ‘single-use plastic’ the Election Commission has directed all the political parties in Haryana and Maharashtra to avoid the use of plastic, polythene and other environmentally hazardous materials in publicity material for the Assembly polls next month.

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora, who announced the election schedule of the two states at a press conference here, said that the commission is asking political parties to use only environmentally friendly materials for campaign purposes.

“Keeping in mind the long-term impact of materials such as plastic, polythene, etc. on the living and subsistence environment, the Commission has directed that all political parties, candidates and their authorized agents, etc., shall desist from utilizing environmentally hazardous materials like plastics, polythene, etc. for the preparation and usage election-related publicity materials during the ensuing elections to the legislative assemblies of Haryana and Maharashtra,” he said.

He said that the District Election Officers and Returning Officers have been directed to emphasize the importance of environmental protection and conservation during meetings with political parties and the Commission’s directives regarding the use of candidates and “non-environmentally friendly Ensure that during electrification all materials like plastic, polythene, etc. are followed by the concerned Will be taken.”

“CEOs will influence the importance of using environmentally friendly and biodegradable materials for campaign materials to various political parties in the states and issue necessary instructions in this regard,” he said.

Both Haryana and Maharashtra will go for one-phase assembly elections on October 21.

The government is insisting on eliminating the use of single-use plastic. The Pol Panel’s latest emphasis on using environmentally friendly materials in the Pole campaign is expected to accelerate efforts towards curbing the use of plastics and polythene.
