EC Seeks Suggestions From Political Parties On Conducting Election Campaigns During COVID19 Pandemic Period

Mumbai: The Election Commission of India has asked national and regional political parties to send their views and suggestions to conduct election campaigns and public meetings during the COVID-19 epidemic period.

The last date for sending suggestions is till 31 July.

“You are aware that some by-elections and General Assembly elections in Bihar are scheduled to take place in 2020. The Commission has expressed a desire to take views from the political parties regarding the above subject. Accordingly, you are requested to kindly send your views and suggestions latest. A letter from the Election Commission states that by July 31, 2020, the necessary guidelines for election campaigns by candidates or political parties can be redrafted to conduct the election during the epidemic.

The letter is addressed to the President-General of the recognized national and state parties.

While stating the instructions issued by it on various aspects of the election campaign, the letter reads, “Election Commission has issued instructions on various aspects of the election campaign from time to time. All the existing instructions have been compiled in Compendium of Instructions, which are available on the Commission’s website.”

“In this regard, the current status of COVID-19 in the country has drawn your attention and several guidelines/directives issued under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 prescribe safeguards to contain it. The state governments have also issued similar guidelines/directives and precautionary measures to control the spread of Covid-19 under relevant statutes,” the letter read.

It added, “Some of the prescribed precautionary measures include wearing face masks in public places, social distances, maintaining a minimum social distance at public places including restrictions on large public gatherings/gatherings, thermal scanning at the venue, and containing sanitation.”
