ED Being Misused, Extraordinary Selective Targeting Of Oppn: Tharoor

Mumbai: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday said that the government institutions are not there to serve political purposes, the Times Now reported. Commenting on the arrest of Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, Tharoor said that government institutions are not there to serve political purposes.

“The ED is being misused. Government institutions are not there to serve political purposes. They should be doing a particular job. You’ve got an extraordinary selective targetting of opposition people and I find this unacceptable because we are a country where democracy is a value in itself and it should be preserved,” Tharoor told Times Now on the sidelines of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Thiruvananthapuram MP is the latest to join the chorus condemning the Enforcement Directorate’s action against Sanjay Raut. Earlier, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge had alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants an opposition-free (Opposition-free) Parliament.

“They (BJP) wants an ‘Opposition-mukt’ Parliament, that’s why the action against Sanjay Raut. We’ll raise issues of inflation, and the Gujarat hooch tragedy in Parliament. ‘Op Keechad’ by them (BJP) in Jharkhand will also be raised today,” he said.

Raut was arrested by the ED on Sunday in an alleged case of disproportionate assets and money laundering.
