Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday carried forward his attack on the Center over the draft Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), saying it should be withdrawn to prevent “environmental destruction”.

Gandhi alleged that the purpose of the draft EIA 2020 was clear – “loot of the nation”.

“This (EIA) is another dreadful example of what the BJP government has been doing for its select suit-boot ‘friends’ who loot the resources of the country,” Gandhi alleged.

“EIA 2020 draft must be withdrawn to stop #LootOfTheNation and environmental destruction,” he tweeted.

The draft EIA notification, which includes the process of issuing environmental clearances for various projects, was released in March by the Ministry of Environment and invited public suggestions.

The Environment Ministry had earlier said that it would not extend the deadline for giving suggestions and opinions beyond June 30 to people but was later given time till August 12.
