Election Commission Announces Holiday On May 19 In Punjab

Mumbai: In view of elections of the parliamentary constituency, the Election Commission announced the holiday on May 19 in Punjab to allow voters to use their franchise to vote.

“According to the provisions of section 135-B of the Representation of People Act, 1951 and instructions issued by ECI, employees of industrial establishments, commercial establishments, shops and establishments can be paid on the date of May 19 voting in Punjab,” Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab, S Karuna Raju told reporters here.

The Punjab government has issued instructions to ensure strict compliance with the guidelines of the Election Commission of India (ECI). “According to the guidelines of the ECI, sales of liquor in the state of Punjab will be restricted 48 hours before and on May 19. To conclude the poll, at 6:00 pm, ends with the scheduled time.

He said, “Similarly, restrictions on the sale of liquor in the 3 km areas of neighbouring states will also be ensured through the respective departments of those states. The purpose of these steps is to prevent any kind of impediment of alcohol from those areas.”

In Punjab, all the 13 Lok Sabha seats will be held on May 19 and the last phase of Lok Sabha elections will be held. Counting of votes will begin on May 23.
