Ex-Mumbai Police Commissioner Fined ₹25,000 For Missing Summons

Mumbai: Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh was fined ₹25,000 by the one-member commission of Justice (retd) Kailash Uttamchand Chandiwal for failing to appear before it on Wednesday.

The Maharashtra government had in March this year constituted a one-man commission of Justice (retd) Kailash Uttamchand Chandiwal to probe the corruption allegations leveled by Singh against the then Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

A public prosecutor said on Thursday that Singh could not appear before the commission on Wednesday, so he was fined Rs 25,000.

During the last hearing, the probe panel had given Singh a “last chance” to appear.

This is the second case of Singh being fined.

In June, the commission had asked the senior IPS officer to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 for not appearing despite summons. This amount was to be deposited in the Chief Minister’s Kovid-19 Relief Fund.

Days after he was removed from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner and transferred to Home Guard in March, Singh claimed in a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray that Deshmukh was asking police officers to collect money from restaurant and bar owners in Mumbai.

NCP leader Deshmukh has denied the allegations.

The Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate are probing the allegations made against Deshmukh by the senior IPS officer.
