Ex-Union Minister Babul Supriyo Who Said He Was Quitting Politics, Joins TMC

Mumbai: Babul Supriyo, who earlier announced his decision to quit politics after being dropped from the Union Cabinet, joined the TMC on Saturday.

He was inducted into the party in the presence of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien.

Confirming the development, TMC took to its official Twitter handle and shared several pictures of Supriyo with TMC leaders.

“Today, in the presence of National General Secretary @abhishekaitc and RS MP @derekobrienmp, former Union Minister and sitting MP @SuPriyoBabul joined the Trinamool family. We take this opportunity to extend a very warm welcome to him!” tweeted the party.

Supriyo, a Lok Sabha MP from Asansol, was a minister in the Modi government but was dropped in a cabinet reshuffle in July. The MP said TMC, Congress or CPI(M) did not approach him.

On 31 July, he announced that he had quit politics and would also resign as an MP. In a Facebook post, he said there was a difference of opinion between him and state BJP leaders and that differences between senior leaders were “damaging the party”.

Babul Supriyo joined the BJP in 2014 and has been elected twice from Asansol.
