Fadnavis-led Mahayuti Govt Wins Trust Motion In Maha Assembly
Mumbai: The Devendra Fadnavis-led government successfully passed a trust vote in the Maharashtra Assembly on Monday. The motion, tabled by Shiv Sena MLA Uday Samant and others, was approved through a voice vote. Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar confirmed the motion’s passage, allowing the session to adjourn until the Maharashtra Governor’s address later in the day.
The BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP ‘Mahayuti’ coalition boasts a significant majority with 230 seats in the 288-member Assembly, well above the 144-seat majority threshold. Fadnavis, sworn in as Chief Minister for the third time on December 5, is joined by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. The oath-taking ceremony, held in Mumbai, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The 15th Legislative Assembly began its tenure on December 7, making the floor test a procedural step given the Mahayuti’s commanding numbers. The proposal for the confidence motion was tabled by Uday Samant, BJP MLA Sanjay Kute, NCP leader Dilip Walse Patil, and independent MLA Ravi Rana.
With Speaker Narwekar’s election, the coalition’s tally stands at 229 MLAs, including smaller parties and independents. The party-wise breakdown in the Assembly is:
Mahayuti (Ruling Coalition):
- BJP: 132
- Shiv Sena: 57
- NCP: 41
- Jan Surabaya Shakti Party: 2
- Rashtriya Yuva Swabhiman Party: 1
- Rashtriya Samaj Paksh: 1
- Independents: 2
- Rajarshi Shahu Vikas Aghadi: 1
Opposition:
- Shiv Sena (UBT): 20
- Congress: 16
- NCP (Sharad Pawar faction): 10
- CPM: 1
- PWP: 1
- AIMIM: 1
- Samajwadi Party: 2
The Mahayuti’s decisive majority ensured a smooth passage of the trust vote, setting the stage for governance under Fadnavis’s leadership.
