Female Doctor On Night Duty Assaulted By Drunk Patient, Attendants At Mumbai Hospital

Mumbai: In a shocking incident at Mumbai’s Sion Hospital, a female resident doctor was allegedly assaulted by a patient and his family members in the early hours of Sunday. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m., leading to a police investigation.

According to authorities, the patient had sustained injuries to his lip and nose during a fight between two groups outside the hospital. Upon arriving at the hospital, the patient received immediate treatment in the casualty ward, where his injuries were dressed. However, due to the nature of his injuries, he was referred to the ENT section for a more thorough examination and a written note, as per hospital protocol.

Dr. Mohan Joshi, a senior official at Sion Hospital, explained, “When the female doctor in the ENT section removed the patient’s dressing to examine his injury, he experienced severe pain. As she began writing the prescription, there was some miscommunication between the doctor and the patient’s relatives, leading to an altercation. The patient’s relatives then threw a dressing item, such as a gauze piece, at the doctor’s face. During the scuffle, the doctor also sustained scratches on her arm.”

The police were alerted by the resident doctor, who immediately informed her colleagues and reported the incident. A police officer stated, “Following the altercation, the patient and his family members allegedly assaulted the doctor. We have recorded the doctor’s statement and registered a case against the patient and his relatives. However, no arrests have been made yet.”

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of medical professionals, particularly those working in high-stress environments like emergency departments. The hospital administration and the police are expected to take further action to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.
