Kashmir Inspector General of Police (IGP) Vijay Kumar said, “FIR registered against a few GMC and SKIMS medical students for allegedly celebrating Pakistan’s victory against India in ICC T20 World Cup match.”

“Students of these two colleges raised pro-Pakistan slogans after Pakistan won the T20 World Cup match against India on Sunday,” added police.

The FIRs have been registered under the Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act (UAPA) against the students of SKIMS (Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences) medical college and Government Medical College, Srinagar.

On Monday, Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti urged people to take Pakistan’s victory over India in the match in the right spirit.

Taking to Twitter, Mehbooba Mufti posted: “Why such anger against Kashmiris for celebrating Pak’s win? Some are even chanting murderous slogans – desh ke gadaaron ko goli maaro/calling to shoot traitors. One hasn’t forgotten how many celebrated by distributing sweets when J&K was dismembered & stripped of special status.”

“Let’s agree to disagree & take it in the right spirit like Virat Kohli who was the first to congratulate the Pakistani cricket team,” she added.

Her statement came after at least 10 Kashmiri students, studying in two private educational institutes in Punjab, claimed that they were assaulted in their hostel rooms vandalised after India faced defeat at the hands of Pakistan in the T20 World Cup cricket match.

While one incident was reported from Rayat Bahrat University in Mohali district’s Kharar, another took place at the Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology located on the outskirts of Sangrur town. The Punjab Police have begun a probe into the incidents.

“Kashmiri students who were assaulted in Sangrur and Kharar Mohali told me that they were rescued by the locals and other Panjabi students. Students from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana had barged into their rooms, thrashed them and went on a rampage,” tweeted J&K Students Association national spokesperson Nasir Khuehami.
