First Train Carrying 2.5 Million Litre Water Leaves For Chennai

The target set by the government is nearly 10 million water daily to supply in the state

Mumbai: In a recent development, the first 50-wagon train carrying 2.5 million litres water from Jolarpet railway station in Vellore district left for the parched city of Chennai early Friday morning.

“Based on slots available for movement of these trains the capacity could go up,” an official said.

The State Government has set a target to reach around 10 million liters of water per day in Chennai.

According to reports, the Southern Railway will charge Rs 7.5 lakh for every trip, for which the Tamil Nadu government has fixed Rs 65 crore.

A second train is also scheduled to carry the same amount of water today to the capital city.

Meanwhile, nearly 900 water tankers have been deployed by the government to supply water to each and every residence out there.

The state government is trying it’s best to decrease the water crisis happening in the state and by this development, the city will meet the basic demands of the people.

The state government has to ensure a minimum of 525 million litres a day to the residents with a demand of 830 million litres a day.

Chennai’s intense water crisis is related to reservoirs – Cholavaram (full capacity 1,081 MCFT) and Redhills (3,300 MCFT) – this season is running dry, whereas storage in Poondi reservoir is 2423 feet, which is as per full capacity 3,231 MCFT. Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Chennai Metro).

The water level of Chembarambakkam Lake (full capacity 3,645 MCFT) is only 1 MCFT.
