Flood-Like Situation In Kota As Rivers Surge Due To Heavy Rain, Red Alert Issued

Rajasthan: Heavy rainfall has caused a flood-like situation in several districts of Rajasthan including Kota. A red alert was issued by the Central Water Commission for Kota on Tuesday, putting out a warning for an “extreme flood situation” in view of the water surge in Parvati-river in Khatoli.

Heavy water has flooded many parts of the city, leaving people unable to leave their homes. The district administration is carrying out rescue operations in waterlogged areas, taking people to higher altitudes that are relatively safe from the effects of floods.

A red alert was issued for Kota by the Central Water Commission (CWC) on Tuesday, warning of a ‘severe flood situation’ in view of the rising water in the Parvati river at Khatoli. At 9 pm, the river was flowing with an increasing trend at 207.77 m from its danger level of 202 m to 5.77 m and 0.22 m above its previous flow record of 207.55 in 1996.

Rajasthan’s Kota division received heavy rain on Tuesday, after which the Chambal river barrage was opened. As a result, water reached the state’s Dholpur district, where 40 villages are now facing the threat of floods.

According to reports, more than two dozen villages have been submerged due to rising water levels in small rivers like Parvati and Chambal.

Taking stock of the situation, Dholpur District Magistrate RK Jaiswal said that instructions have been given to keep an eye on the villages which are in the grip of danger.

Not only Dholpur, other districts of Rajasthan such as Baran, Swai Madhopur, Karauli, Jhalawar, Dausa, Tonk Bundi and some cities of the capital Jaipur also recorded heavy rains in the past, causing flooding of nearby dams and rivers.

A flood-like situation has been seen in the most affected Shahabad and Kishanganj blocks of the Baran district of Rajasthan.

The flood situation in Shahabad and Kishanganj blocks of Baran district has been reported as ‘severe’. So far, around 700 people have been evacuated from low-lying villages, while 40-50 people are still reported to be trapped in Sodana and Raibarpura villages.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rainfall was witnessed at most places in eastern Rajasthan and some places in the western part of the state during the past 24 hours.
