FM Nirmala Sitharaman Launches ₹6 Lakh Crore ‘National Monetisation Pipeline’

Mumbai: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday launched the ‘National Monetisation Pipeline’ to monetize assets worth ₹6 lakh crore over FY 2022-25.

The plan lists the government’s four-year plan to monetize its brownfield infrastructure assets ranging from roads, railways, power transmission, power generation to mining.

The pipeline has been launched to unlock the value of ‘government investment and public money in infrastructure, the government said.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who launched the National Monetization Pipeline, said that the National Monetization Pipeline will be ‘concurrent with the National Infrastructure Pipeline launched in 2019.

Sitharaman clarified that the property will not be sold to the private sector but will be given to them for their better use.

The ownership of the property remains with the government. There will be a mandatory hand back. After launching the National Monetization Pipeline, the Finance Minister said that they (private sector partners) will have to give it back after a certain time.

The NMP is also designed to attract more investors to the country and encourage alternative financing for infrastructure assets.

In the Union Budget for 2021-22, the Finance Minister had made several important announcements regarding asset monetization and emphasized the fact that the government is looking at innovative ways to raise finance.

Under the NMP, the Center is finalizing infrastructure assets worth Rs 6 lakh crore, including power grid pipelines along national highways, mobile towers, stadia, railway stations as well as power grid pipelines among other key assets, which it plans to monetize.
