Mumbai: Former CBI Chief Alok Verma gave his resignation from his duty on Friday. This showed that he refused to take the charge as the director general of fire services and home guards. He resigned a day after he was removed from his post by Supreme Court Justice AK Sikri, PM Narendra Modi and Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.
According to the PTI, Verma in his resignation letter said that it was the moment of “collective introspection”.
“Also, it may be noted that the undersigned already superannuated as on July 31, 2017 and was only serving Government as Director, CBI till January 31, 2019, as the same was fixed tenure role. The undersigned is no longer Director, CBI and has already crossed the superannuation age for DG Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards. Accordingly, the undersigned may be deemed as superannuated with effect from today,” Verma said in his letter to Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training Friday.
Verma, a 1979-batch IPS officer from AGMUT cadre, was transferred from the position of CBI Director to Director General, Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards under the home ministry Thursday.
This is the second time Alok Verma was discarded from the CBI top post. On October 23, 2018, the government sent Alok Verma on forced leave after his conflict with CBI’s No. 2 officer Rakesh Asthana became public.
The panel comprised of Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister of India and the Leader of the Opposition met last evening when Justice AK Sikri (who was CJI Ranjan Gogoi’s nominee) and PM Narendra Modi voted to remove Alok Verma as Director, CBI.
