Forming Govt With Ajit Pawar Was A Mistake: Former Maha CM Fadnavis

Mumbai: Former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said that forming a government in 2019 for almost three days with Ajit Pawar was a mistake.

“I don’t regret it but we should not have formed such a government. This was a mistake,” the BJP leader said during an online interaction with editors of Marathi daily Loksatta.

“Even though it (to form a government with Ajit Pawar) was a mistake, when you are stabbed in the back, you have to survive in politics,” Mr Fadnavis said, referring to Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. Pre-poll alliance with BJP.

He said, “You have to do what you have to do to survive in politics. So when you get stabbed in the back, you have to give a befitting reply.”

Fadnavis, who is now the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, said, “So when we got the opportunity, we seized it. Now I can say that what we did was not liked by our supporters and BJP supporters at all.”

“I also agree that my image among our supporters has suffered a lot. It would have been better if we had not tried (to form the government with Ajit Pawar), but at that time I thought it was It’s the right decision,” he added.

On November 23, 2019, amid hectic parleys between the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress to form a non-BJP government in the state after the polls threw up a hung Assembly, Fadnavis and Pawar were sworn in at dawn in a ceremony at Raj Bhavan.
