Mumbai: France has confirmed the first case of a new coronavirus version that has recently surfaced in Britain, its Health Ministry said.
The new strain of the virus, which experts fear is more contagious, has prompted more than 50 countries to impose travel restrictions on the UK.
The ministry said late Friday that the first French case – found in a UK citizen who arrived from London on 19 December.
He was tested in a hospital on 21 December and was later found positive for stress.
Health officials have traced the contact to health professionals caring for the patient, the ministry said in a statement.
Any of their contacts were seen as weak, would be similarly isolated.
In addition to this first case, several other positive samples that may “suggest that the VOC 202012/01 version is being sequenced”, said the specialist laboratories of the National Pasteur Institute.
