Fresh Orders For 25 Crore Covishield Doses And 19 Crore Covaxin Doses Placed: Govt

Mumbai: A day after announcing free COVID-19 vaccine doses for states, the government today said that it had placed an order of 44 crore doses. Purchase orders of 25 crore Covishield doses and 19 crore Covaxin doses have been placed with SII and Bharat Biotech, respectively.

NITI Aayog Member-Health Dr VK Paul said that these purchase orders are in addition to the advance order of 30 crore vaccine doses placed with Biologics. The Corbevax vaccine being developed by Biological E is expected to be available by September if it clears all trials.

“The government has ordered to procure 25 crore doses of Covishield and 19 crore doses of Covaxin. The government has also ordered to procure 30 crore doses of biological E vaccine, which will be available by September,” Dr Paul said.

According to the Health Ministry, 44 crore doses of Covishield and Covaxin, for which fresh orders have been placed, will be used in the vaccination program by December 2021.

The government said it has already released a 30 per cent advance payment to Serum Institute of India (SII) and Bharat Biotech for the purchase of both vaccines.

It may be noted that SII manufactures the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab, known as Covishield in India, while Covaxin is manufactured by Bharat Biotech, which has developed the vaccine indigenously.
