From Vision to Global Platform: The Journey Behind Periwinkle Technologies’ BRICS Showcase
Pune/New Delhi: Long before Periwinkle Technologies found itself under the global spotlight at the BRICS Bharat Innovates Exposition, its journey began with a deeply human question: What if cervical cancer screening could reach the women who need it most?
Founded in Pune in 2013 by entrepreneurs Veena Moktali and Koustubh Naik, Periwinkle Technologies emerged from a concern that cervical cancer—despite being preventable and treatable when detected early—continued to claim lives because timely screening was not always accessible.
The founders envisioned a different approach: bringing reliable cervical cancer screening technology closer to women, including those living in rural, remote, and resource-constrained communities.
Turning that vision into reality required years of product development, clinical collaboration, field testing, and refinement. Instead of developing technology solely within a laboratory, the team worked with doctors, nurses, healthcare institutions, and public-health stakeholders to understand how screening actually happens in real-world settings.
That approach led to Smart Scope® CX, a patented, handheld digital cervical imaging device designed to support healthcare professionals with AI-enabled screening and clinical decision support. Periwinkle says the technology has been developed to fit practical healthcare workflows rather than function as technology for technology’s sake.
The journey was far from straightforward. Like many Indian MedTech innovators, Periwinkle had to navigate product development, clinical validation, regulatory requirements, intellectual-property protection, and the challenge of building confidence in a new healthcare technology.
The company has subsequently secured ISO 13485:2016 certification, while Smart Scope® CX has obtained the US FDA 510(k) and Indian CDSCO regulatory approvals along with a few other international ones.
Its journey has also attracted international recognition. Smart Scope® CX has been recognised through initiatives including the Zayed Sustainability Prize 2025, MIT Solve Global Health Challenge 2025, and the UNFPA Equalizer Challenge, among other honours.
The next chapter arrived in 2026, when Periwinkle was selected among Indian deep-tech ventures participating in Bharat Innovates. The BRICS Bharat Innovates Exposition at Bharat Mandapam featured 37 Indian deep-tech startups and ventures selected from the original cohort of 120.
At the New Delhi exposition, Veena Moktali and Koustubh Naik presented Smart Scope® CX to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting BRICS leaders, bringing an innovation that began in Pune to a prominent international platform.
For Periwinkle Technologies, the BRICS showcase is more than a milestone. It represents the evolution of an idea into a globally relevant Indian MedTech innovation—and demonstrates how persistence, field-led engineering and a clear healthcare mission can turn a local vision into technology designed for women around the world.
