Gen Bipin Rawat Appointed Chief Of Defence Staff

According to a government order, General Rawat has been appointed CDS with effect from 31 December

Mumbai: In another development, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat was appointed the country’s first Chief of Defense Staff on Monday, whose mandate would be to bring convergence to the functioning of the Army, Navy and Indian Air Force.

According to a government order, General Rawat has been appointed CDS with effect from 31 December.

General Rawat took charge as Chief of the Army Staff on 31 December 2016. He was to retire from service on Tuesday. Prior to becoming Chief of the Army, he held various operational responsibilities in Pakistan with LOC, LAC with China and in several areas in the Northeast.

The Cabinet Committee on Security Affairs last Tuesday approved the creation of the CDS, which will serve as the defence minister’s chief military advisor on all matters related to the tri-services.

A major command of the CDS would be to facilitate the reorganization of military command for optimal use of resources by bringing jointness into operation, including the establishment of joint / theatre command.

Officials said that CDS will have another major mandate in operation, logistics, transport, training, support services, communications, communication, repairing and maintenance of all three services within three years.
