Geo-Tagging Of Cattle Begins In Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur

Mumbai: In Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, geo-tagging cattle have now started fighting with the threat of stray cattle.

Gorakhpur Municipal Commissioner Anjani Kumar Singh said that they have started geo-tagging of cattle as there were several complaints regarding traffic issues due to abandoned cattle wandering on roads.

He further said that now if a geo-tagged animal is found wandering on streets, they can identify the owner and penalize him for leaving his/her cattle free on roads. Geo-tagging will also help them to keep a count of cattle in the area.

Classes were conducted outside the school after villagers lost their way, a teacher said, requesting anonymity. Villagers disrupted school work. Police are searching for them, he said.

Meanwhile, the state government spent Rs 600 crore on animal welfare and construction and maintenance of cowsheds in 2019-20. The announcement was made in several districts in view of the closure of stray animals in schools and public health centres after farmers damaged their crops.

The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has also started geo-tagging of cows to tackle the menace of stray cattle on the city’s roads which often leads to traffic congestion and is a major cause of accidents, officials said Wednesday.

“We have started geo-tagging of cattle in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of the JMC and are hopeful of completing the process within next six months to achieve our goal of making the city free from stray cattle menace,” Municipal Veterinary Officer, Zaffar Iqbal, told PTI.

“A 15-digit tag is injected into the skin of the animal near the neck which will help us keep a tap on the animal, besides providing the details of its owner. Once the tagging is done, its owner will be fined if the animal is caught for the second time roaming on the streets and impounded if caught for the third time,” the officer said.

“We have started this drive some time back and so far we have tagged over 300 cows in the city. The mass-level tagging covering all the 300 dairies in Jammu will be started in a couple of days and the process is expected to be completed within the next six months,” Iqbal added.
