‘Get Your Act Together’: Shashi Tharoor To UK Quarantine Rule

Mumbai: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday slammed the United Kingdom over its quarantine rules for fully vaccinated Indian travellers and asked the country to “do its work together”.

Tharoor, who travelled to the UK, confirmed that he has cancelled his trip in view of the new quarantine rules imposed by the UK government.

While talking to the media, he said, “Double standards applied by the UK are impossible to understand. I personally don’t have time to go to a country and sit in quarantine for 10 days. So I have cancelled my trip.”

Attacking the country’s policy for Indian travellers, the Congress MP said, “It’s time we all stood up and said to the British – ‘Get your act together.”

“Either you ask Serum Institute of India (SII) to make those vaccines and ship them to Britain or you say you don’t accept the vaccines. You can’t have it both ways,” he added.

Under new British rules introduced last week, Indians who have received two doses of the CovidShield vaccine will be considered unvaccinated and will have to self-quarantine for 10 days, even though the vaccine is the same as the AstraZeneca vaccine developed by Oxford University but manufactured in India and in use many Western countries like Canada.

Travellers from several countries who have received the AstraZeneca vaccine are allowed into the UK without having to quarantine if they meet certain conditions, but not Indians in a move that is seen as discriminatory.
