Glenn Maxwell Announces ODI Retirement to Focus on T20 World Cup and Global T20 Leagues

Mumbai: In a major development for Australian cricket, flamboyant all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs). The 36-year-old made the decision public on Monday, citing his desire to focus on the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, along with commitments to the Big Bash League and other global T20 tournaments.

Maxwell, who recently featured for Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, leaves behind a celebrated ODI career spanning 149 matches. Renowned for his explosive batting and innovative stroke play, the Victorian cricketer retires with a phenomenal career strike rate of 126 — the second-highest in ODI history, behind only West Indies’ Andre Russell.

One of Maxwell’s most iconic moments came during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. In a high-stakes clash against Afghanistan, Australia were staring at defeat at 91/7 while chasing 293. Maxwell, battling intense cramps in sweltering heat, produced what many consider one of the greatest ODI innings ever. He scored an unbeaten 201 off 128 deliveries and built a remarkable 202-run stand with captain Pat Cummins, single-handedly steering Australia to an improbable victory. The win proved pivotal, with Australia eventually lifting the World Cup trophy after defeating hosts India in the final at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Speaking about his retirement, Maxwell said, “It’s been an incredible journey in ODIs, but it’s time to shift focus. With the 2026 T20 World Cup on the horizon and exciting opportunities in T20 leagues around the world, I want to ensure I’m at my peak for those challenges.”

Maxwell’s departure marks the end of an era in Australia’s white-ball cricket setup. With his exceptional fielding, handy off-spin, and game-changing ability with the bat, he has been a mainstay in the squad for over a decade.

As Australia looks to groom new talent in the 50-over format, Maxwell’s presence will continue to be felt in the shortest format of the game, where he remains a vital cog in Australia’s T20 plans.

Career Highlights:

  • ODI Matches: 149
  • Runs: Over 3,500
  • Strike Rate: 126 (2nd highest in ODI history)
  • Memorable Knock: 201* vs Afghanistan, 2023 World Cup
  • World Cups Won: 2 (2015, 2023)

Maxwell’s legacy in ODI cricket will be remembered not just for his statistics but for the audacity and flair with which he redefined middle-order batting.
