Goa CM Sawant To Contest Polls From Sanquelim; Parrikar’s Son Denied Ticket From Panaji

Mumbai: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday announced 34 candidates for the upcoming Goa Assembly elections.

As announced by state election in-charge Devendra Fadnavis along with BJP general secretary Arun Singh, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will be the party’s candidate from Sanquelim. Goa Deputy Chief Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar will contest Margao.

Interestingly, the name of late Chief Minister and Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar’s son Utpal Parrikar was not on the list released today.

Significantly, since 1994, there was a standoff between the BJP leadership and Utpal Parrikar over the demand for tickets from the Panaji assembly seat.

According to the list released today, Panaji’s sitting MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate has been given the ticket. Talking about Monserrate’s candidature from Panjim, Devendra Fadnavis, former Maharashtra CM and BJP’s Goa in-charge for the assembly elections, said that “Utpal Parrikar and his family are our families”.

“We gave two more options to him but he rejected the first one and the second option is being discussed with him. We feel that he should agree,” said Fadnavis suggested that Utpal is not out of the race just yet.

While announcing the candidates, Fadnavis emphasised that the BJP ushered in a new era of development in Goa in the last 10 years while also ensuring stability.
