Goa Poll Trends: BJP Closing In On Half-Way Mark, CM Pramod Sawant Now In Lead

Mumbai: In Goa, the Bharatiya Janata Party is approaching the halfway mark as the initial trends for counting votes for 18 assembly seats are underway.

The data of the Election Commission of India at 10.30 am shows that the BJP is leading in 18 assembly seats out of the total 40 seats in the state. While BJP is leading in 18 seats, Congress is leading in 12 seats. Also Read: Early Trends Show AAP Crossing Halfway Mark In Punjab Assembly Elections

Present Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is leading from the Sankelim assembly seat by more than 300 votes so far. The majority mark in the state is 21 assembly seats. Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party is leading in five seats, Election Commission data shows that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also leading in one seat. Also Read: Early Trends Show BJP Crossing Majority Mark In Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections

In terms of vote share, BJP is second with 33.74 per cent and Congress 23.77 per cent vote share. Goa Forward Party is leading in one seat. Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant ‘Babu’ Kavlekar is trailing by over 1,400 votes from Elton de Costa of Congress from the Quepem constituency.

Former CM and Congress Legislature Party leader Digambar Kamat, who is a six-time MLA from Margao, is leading against Manohar Ajgaonkar of the BJP. Congress ally, Goa Forward Party chief Vijay Sardesai is leading in his stronghold in the Fatorda constituency.

In the Panaji Assembly seat, BJP’s Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate is leading over Independent candidate Utpal Parrikar, son of former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

Congress candidate and former BJP minister Michael Lobo have taken a comfortable lead in his stronghold Calangute constituency, while BJP’s Rohan Khaunte is leading in the Porvorim seat.

With voters predicting a hung assembly, BJP and Congress leaders in Goa will keep a close eye on the popular verdict to assess the chances of government formation in the state.

The BJP fought the elections on all 40 seats in the state while the Goa Forward Party (GFP) entered into a pre-poll alliance with Congress. The TMC allied with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party for the polls.
