Govt Is Committed To Double Income Of Farmers’ Says Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar

Mumbai: Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said on Wednesday that the government still left its door open for discussions with farmers about three new agricultural laws.

Recalling previous conversations with farmers agitating against central agricultural laws, Tomar said: “The Indian government is committed to doubling the income of farmers and working for the welfare of agriculture. Discussions have been held many times, if they have a point to raise even now, we are ready to discuss.”

This is when farmer leader Rakesh Tikait announced plans to go to Parliament with 40 lakh tractors to increase pressure on the central government to withdraw the three agricultural laws.

Speaking at a farmers rally in Sikar, Rajasthan, Tikait said, “Our next call will be for the March for Parliament. We will tell them before March. This time it will not be just 4 lakh tractors but 40 lakh tractors will go there if farm laws are not taken back.”

The Agriculture Minister said that more than 10 lakh farmers have benefited from the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Nidhi Yojana.

Tomar said, “10,75,00,000 farmers have been benefitted from the scheme and their accounts have generated more than Rs. 1,15,000 crore. Their annual income has increased by about Rs. 6,000.”

He further said that the government is committed to double the income of farmers and work for their welfare.

He said, “Government of India is committed to doubling farmers’ income and working for agricultural welfare, increasing their contribution to the country’s GDP. We want farmers to spend less and earn more and we will soon see the difference.”

Farmers have been protesting on the different borders of the national capital since November 26 against the three newly enacted farm laws – Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
