Hardik Patel Quits Congress, Says ‘Party Played Role Of Roadblock On National Issues’

Mumbai: Gujarat Congress Committee working president Hardik Patel, who recently expressed discontentment with the state party leadership, on Wednesday resigned from Congress.

The 28-year-old flamboyant Patidar leader is said to have been upset with the functioning of the Gujarat Congress and had earlier claimed that he was being “harassed” in the party.

“Today I courageously resign from the post of Congress party and primary membership of the party. I am sure that my decision will be welcomed by all my colleagues and the people of Gujarat. I believe that after this step of mine, I will be able to work really positively for Gujarat in the future,” he wrote on Twitter.

In his resignation letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Patel said that despite several attempts to “direct the Congress in the right direction”, the party continued to work against the “interest of the country and society”.

He also sought to praise several decisions of the Narendra Modi-led Centre, including abrogation of Article 370, implementation of GST and construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, and said, “India has long wanted a solution to these issues.”

“When it came to issues related to India, Gujarat and my Patidar community – Congress’s only stand was to oppose whatever Govt. of India led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji did! Congress today has been rejected in almost every state of India because the party and its leadership have not been able to present a basic roadmap to the people,” the letter read.

“We are in the 21st century and India is the youngest country in the world. The youth of our country wants a strong and capable leader…The people always seek an alternative that thinks of their future and is capable of taking India ahead. Be it the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, revocation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, or implementation of GST – India wanted solutions for these subjects for a long time and Congress only played the role of a roadblock and was always only obstructive,” it added.

The Gujarat Congress working president had earlier this month removed his designation and party symbol ‘hand’ from his Twitter profile, fueling speculation that he may quit the party ahead of the year-end assembly elections.
