Highest Pay To Any Country, UN Owes $38 Million From India

Mumbai: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said while voicing concern towards worsened the financial health of the world’s body that The United Nations owes India’s $38 million and is the largest for the UN to pay for any of the countries.

He said in his report to improve the financial situation of the world’s health that over $265 million amount is been contributed as of March 31 2019, for active peacekeeping missions.

From $265 million, UN owes $38 million to India, followed by Rwanda ($31 million), Pakistan ($28 million), Bangladesh ($25 million) and Nepal ($23 million).

Antonio Guterres said that “In the worst case scenario” it could increase to $588 million by June 2019.

He said, “It has created a paradox. With a prolonged period, the UN is been borrowing effectively from troop- and police-contributing countries. Many countries are low income grouped which imposes financial burden”.

He stated to all countries to improve their types of equipment to those same countries while operating in challenging environments.

Antonio further stated that police-contributing countries make every step to provide for peacekeeping operations by good training and by well-equipped personnel. He said they go on and continue to meet the objective.

Earlier to present year, Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN had said that the financial delay of the UN for its peacekeeping operation to the troop/police contributing countries is a matter of concern.

Antonio said that the UN is working to become more effective and progressive but it doesn’t only depends on the internal effort of the Secretariat but also with the support of Member states and on the adequacy of their financial contributions to UN programmes and activities.

Mr Guterres said, “frequent cash constraints were faced by peacekeeping operations that led to delay in settlement to troop- and police-contributing countries”.

In an eight-period, UN has a successive cash balance of $412 million in 2010’s end and with a negative cash balance has $323 million in 2018.
