Home Minister Amit Shah Reviews J&K Situation

Mumbai: Officials said Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, with reports of 230 terrorists waiting for the launch pads of terrorists in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to enter the country.

During the two-hour-long meeting, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba also attended, the Home Minister was given a detailed presentation on the current security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly along the international border and the Line of Control.

The security minister said that the home minister took stock of the situation and gave information about the steps taken to maintain peace in the border areas as well as the valley.

The meeting came amid reports that militant launch pads were brought by Pakistan to push around 230 terrorists into Jammu and Kashmir.

Lieutenant General K J Dhillon, General Officer Commanding, 15 Corps, who looks after the Kashmir Valley, recently said that there have been infiltration attempts from across the border.

Launchpads in the POK, Rajouri and Jammu sectors are fully fabricated, often including Lashkar, JM, Hizbul and Al Badr. Firing happens every day. Infiltration attempts also occur in Poonch, Rajouri and Jammu sectors.

After repealing Article 370 on August 5, normal life was affected in Kashmir Valley on Monday for the 43rd consecutive day. Most shops remained closed and public transport remained off the roads.

Internet services were suspended on all platforms.

While the landline in the valley was functional, voice calls on mobile devices were functioning only in the Kupwara and Handwara police districts of North Kashmir.

Another official said that most areas of the valley were ban-free, but the deployment of security forces to maintain law and order continues on the ground.

The restrictions were first imposed in Kashmir on 5 August when the Center announced its decision to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution and divide the state into two union territories.

Restrictions were removed in phases from many parts of the valley as the situation improved with the passage of time.
