Hong Kong Confirms Death Of Patient With Coronavirus

Mumbai: After China, Hong Kong becomes a second-place outside of the Chinese mainland to report the death of a patient being treated for a new coronavirus that has so far claimed more than 400 lives.

Medical officials confirmed a 39-year-old man who was being treated for the virus died on Tuesday morning.
The man was a resident of Hong Kong who had travelled to the Chinese city of Wuhan last month, returning home via a high-speed rail link on 23 January.

Since emerging from Wuhan at the end of last year, coronavirus has infected 20,000 people throughout China and spread to more than 20 countries.

But so far only the Philippines and Hong Kong have reported a fatal incident outside the Chinese mainland.
The maximum deaths in China have occurred in Wuhan and the rest of the surrounding Hubei province, most of which have been locked up for about two weeks.

The Hospital Authority of Hong Kong said more information about the death would be released later on Tuesday.
Several local media outlets cited medical sources as stating that the man had underlying health issues that complicated his treatment.

He died a day after the Hong Kong leader announced the closure of all but two land borders for the Chinese mainland in a bid to stop the spread of the virus.

Currently, 15 people have tested positive for the virus in Hong Kong, many of those who arrived in the semi-autonomous city from the mainland.

Public anger is growing over the outbreak of the Hong Kong government, with calls to completely seal the border. Masks and strikes are also lacking by some medical personnel entering its second day on Tuesday.

While Hong Kong maintains close economic and cultural ties to the Chinese mainland, a large distrust of authorities in Beijing permits the city.

Desolation – and oftentimes open enmity – has worsened over the years of political unrest towards the mainland as the people of Hong Kong are under Beijing’s rule, protesting for more democratic freedom.
