‘Housefull 5’ Opens Strong Despite Criticism; Soundarya Sharma Responds to Backlash

Mumbai: Despite stirring controversy for its alleged sexist humour and objectification of women, Housefull 5 has recorded a stellar opening week at the Indian box office. The film, which released in theatres on June 6, has already raked in over ₹130 crore nett within its first seven days, marking it as Akshay Kumar’s ninth-highest-grossing film to date.

The latest entry in the popular comedy franchise boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, Sonam Bajwa, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Ranjeet, Dino Morea, Fardeen Khan, Chitrangada Singh, Johnny Lever, and Chunky Panday. Among the new faces is actor Soundarya Sharma, who has found herself at the centre of public discourse following the film’s release.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Live on YouTube, Soundarya Sharma addressed the backlash, urging viewers to adopt a broader perspective when interpreting the film’s content.

“I think it depends on every individual’s perspective,” Sharma said. “I don’t mix my own vision with what my director wants me to do. The film was made on a lighter note, and everyone is just playing a character. All these characters are a reflection of our own society.”

Acknowledging the online trolling, Sharma took a pragmatic view, stating that even negative buzz has contributed to the film’s visibility and reach.

“I am grateful for the people who are trolling the movie because that gives the film more publicity,” she added.

When asked for her personal view on the film’s reception, Sharma cited examples of critically acclaimed movies that have also faced backlash.

“Not everyone will like whatever you put out there. I am sure people have certain disagreements with cult films like Baahubali and Animal, or even classics like Pakeezah or Guide. So I think this is just an amalgamation of opinions.”

With two alternate endings and a heavy dose of slapstick humour, Housefull 5 continues the franchise’s tradition of chaotic comedy and ensemble storytelling. Whether loved or loathed, it has certainly become the film everyone is talking about.
