Mumbai: After Virat Kohli equaled the Little Master’s world record with an outstanding century against South Africa on Sunday at the One Day International (ODI) World Cup 2023, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar had nothing but the highest admiration for the former captain of India.
Matchday 37 of the ICC World Cup saw Kohli return to the iconic Eden Gardens, where he celebrated his 35th birthday with style while leading Rohit Sharma’s team to victory over the formidable Proteas.
Run machine Kohli equaled the world record formerly held by Master Blaster Tendulkar with a brilliant 49th ODI century. On his 35th birthday in Kolkata, Kohli struck his maiden ODI century at Eden Gardens in 2009. Leading India’s push in the World Cup 2023, Kohli made a triumphant return to the legendary arena, smashing a 49-over record.
Legendary batsman Tendulkar was among the first figures in the game to congratulate Kohli on reaching the significant mark on X, formerly known as Twitter. Former India captain Tendulkar supported Kohli to smash his world record at the ODI World Cup in a special message to the hitting ace.
“Well played Virat. It took me 365 days to go from 49 to 50 earlier this year. I hope you go from 49 to 50 and break my record in the next few days. Congratulations!!,” Tendulkar said.
In their individual ODI careers, only Tendulkar and Kohli have amassed 49 hundreds in the format. In 438 innings, batting great Tendulkar hammered 49 ODI hundreds. The same achievement was made by Kohli in 277 innings. Against South Africa, former India captain Virat Kohli hammered his 49th ODI century in 119 balls. During his record-breaking World Cup performance, Kohli hit ten fours for the Men in Blue.
