Immediately Secure And Preserve Travel Records Of PM During His Punjab Visit: SC

Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Registrar General of Punjab and Haryana High Court to immediately secure and preserve all travel and communication records pertaining to PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab and the security lapse. Also Read: Punjab Government Submits Report To MHA On PM Security Lapse, Claims It Had No Prior Info On Change In Route

The top court, while hearing a plea seeking a court-monitored probe into security breaches, directed the Punjab government to ensure that all records and material relating to the PM’s activities in the state on Wednesday be immediately secured in the custody of the registrar-general of the Punjab & Haryana high court. Also Read: Punjab Forms High-Level Panel To Probe PM Security Lapse, To Submit Report In 3 Days

It directed the Punjab Police, Special Protection Group (SPG), and other central and state agencies to provide necessary assistance to the Registrar-General, who would be accountable for the security of travel records. Also Read: President Kovind Meets PM Modi For First-Hand Account Of His Security Breach In Punjab

The top court said that the Director-General of Police (DGP) of Chandigarh and an officer of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will also act as nodal officers for coordination with the Registrar-General.

It was also clarified that both the committees constituted by the Center and the Punjab government to probe the incident will put on hold their probe till Monday (January 10), when the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by the lawyer’s voice is to be taken up.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana, who was heading the three-judge bench, was quoted as saying by Bar & Bench, “Ask both the committees to hold their operations till Monday. This will not be in the order, but it’s understood.”

The incident took place in Punjab’s Ferozepur district on Wednesday afternoon, when the PM’s convoy was stuck on the highway for about 15-20 minutes, blocking their route. The blockade was led by members of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (Revolutionary), one of the 32 agricultural organizations that were part of a 14-month-long protest against the three laws.
