India & Bangladesh Marks 50 Years Of Friendship By Celebrating ‘Maitri Diwas’

Bangladesh's PM Sheikh Hasina remembered then Indian PM Indira Gandhi, who helped Bangladesh become a independent nation

Mumbai: On the occasion of ‘Maitri Diwas’, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that India and Bangladesh are ‘celebrating the golden jubilee’ of its relations and bilateral ties.

“Bangladesh and India are celebrating the golden jubilee of the establishment of diplomatic relations, this is a milestone in the journey of our bilateral ties. India recognized Bangladesh as an independent & sovereign state on Dec 6, 1971,” Bangladesh’s PM Sheikh Hasina.

Remembering the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Sheikh Hasina said that her government-provided accommodation to 10 million Bangladeshi refugees.

“Today, I fondly recall the generosity of former Indian PM Indira Gandhi & her government. They provided accommodation to 10 million refugees from Bangladesh. During visit of PM Modi to Bangladesh in March, it was decided to recognize Dec 6 as Maitri Diwas,” Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also tweeted on this occasion and wrote, “Today India and Bangladesh are celebrating Friendship Day. Our friendship has completed 50 years and I am working with Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina to further strengthen our relationship.”

“The holding of Maitri Diwas is a reflection of the deep and abiding friendship between the peoples of India and Bangladesh that has been forged in blood and shared sacrifices,’’ foreign office spokesman Arindam Bagchi said while announcing the decision.

In the year 1971, India recognized Bangladesh as an independent country on 6 December.
