India Beat Australia To Reach Women’s Hockey Semi-Finals At Olympics For The First Time

Mumbai: India defeated Australia 1-0 in the women’s hockey quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympics to reach the semi-finals at Olympics for the first time. Gurjit Kaur scored the lone goal of the match in the 22nd minute.

The Indian players gave their all as they ensured that Gurjit’s effort was not wasted. The Aussies gave their all, but the Indian women refused to bow down, although the Aussies were building up the pressure with every passing minute.

The first quarter started at a brisk pace as both teams put their foot on the accelerator and the forwards from both teams came very close to finding the back of the net. But no one could score after the first fifteen minutes.

After saving a penalty corner at the other end, India soon got their second PC of the match in the second quarter. India’s star drag-flicker Gurjeet made sure she counted the opportunities as she gave the Women in Blue a crucial lead against the mighty Aussies.

The Indian went straight for the PC and after hitting the leg, the ball hit a stick and hit the goal. Significantly, Australia had conceded only one goal in the tournament so far. As expected, in the second half, Hockeyroos shook hands in search of a goal. But India’s goalkeeper Savita and defence stood firm.

India again kept Australia at bay with some smart defence in the last quarter as they made sure they didn’t let Hockeyroos spoil the dream of making it to the semi-final.

In Rio Olympics 2016, India finished 12th out of 12 teams and also lost 1-6 against Australia in the mega event. It has been a big change for the Indian team since the last Olympics.

India will face Argentina in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
