India Break Pak’s World Record For Winning Most Consecutive ODI Series Against A Team

Mumbai: India has broken the world record for winning the most consecutive bilateral ODI series against a team. With their win in the second ODI against West Indies, India registered their 12th consecutive ODI series victory against West Indies.

India’s arch-rivals Pakistan had earlier created a record by winning 11 consecutive ODI series against Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, the pace enjoyed a rollercoaster ride in the game as West Indies put up a stellar performance. After posting a challenging 311/6 while batting first, the hosts picked up wickets at regular intervals and tightened their grip on the competition.

However, a timely and quick half-century from all-rounder Axar Patel meant that the visitors crossed the line with few balls to spare. Notably, it was also India’s most successful ODI run-chase in the West Indies. Overall, Team India’s chase was the third biggest target on Caribbean soil.

Earlier in the competition, West Indies won the toss and opted to bat at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain in Trinidad. The Men in Maroon got off to a brisk start with openers Kyle Meyers and Shai Hope being aggressive from the start.

The two put on 65 runs for the first wicket before the former was dismissed for 39. Hope, on the other hand, scored his 13th ODI century and finished on 115. Shamar Brooks also scored 35, with skipper Nicholas Pooran scoring plenty of runs – West Indies needed 74 off 77 balls to cross the 300-run mark.

Unlike the previous game, India had a poor start with skipper Shikhar Dhawan scoring 13 runs in 31 balls. In the ship, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer scored 43 and 63 runs respectively. The baton was then given to Sanju Samson and Axar Patel, who scored their maiden ODI half-centuries.

Axar was brilliant in particular as he scored 64 off just 35 deliveries and remained unbeaten till the end. As a result, India crossed the line in the last over to seal the series. The all-rounder, who also recorded bowling figures of 1/40 in nine overs, was adjudged the Player of the Match.

Meanwhile, the third and final ODI will take place at the same venue on Wednesday (July 27).
