India-China Face-Off In Arunachal’s Tawang; Few PLA Soldiers Detained Temporarily

The incident came amid a continuing standoff between Indian and Chinese troops in several areas in eastern Ladakh

Mumbai: Last Week a face-off between the Indian and Chinese soldiers was reported from Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. The face-off between the two sides lasted for a few hours and was resolved as per the existing protocols.

As per the sources in the defence establishment, the engagement took place due to differences in perception of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The incident took place between the border pass of Bum La and Yangtse, near the LAC.

“There was no damage caused to own defences in the engagement,” ANI quoted sources in the defence establishment.

According to a report by News18, around 200 PLA (People’s Liberation Army) soldiers tried to damage unoccupied bunkers and a few of them were temporarily detained by the Indian soldiers in Tawang.

There has been no information about the face-off from the Indian Army nor the government.

The incident came amid a continuing standoff between Indian and Chinese troops in several areas in eastern Ladakh though both sides completed disengagement in two sensitive locations.

The Chinese side has significantly ramped up infrastructure development along the LAC in the sector and India is closely monitoring PLA’s movement.

Both sides have deployed 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC in the sensitive sector

This is not the first time Chinese troops have crossed the LAC in the Arunachal sector. In 2016, Chinese troops transgressed into the Indian side of the LAC at Yangtse but returned after few hours.

In January this year, US-based imaging company Planet Labs claimed that around 100 houses have been built along the river Tsari Chu in the upper Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh.

Reacting to this, the Ministry of External Affairs said that India has significantly stepped up building infrastructure projects in the border areas for the improvement of the livelihood of its citizens, including in Arunachal.

On August 30, close to 100 PLA soldiers transgressed the LAC in the Barahoti sector in Uttarakhand and returned from the area after spending few hours. There was no official comment on the Chinese transgression.
