Mumbai: India on Monday created history by confirming their first-ever medal in lawn bowls at CWG. India reached the gold medal match of the women’s fours lawn bowls event at CWG 2022. India defeated New Zealand 16-13 in the semi-final.

India was represented by Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey in the semi-final.

New Zealand started the match in a spectacular fashion, taking a 5-0 lead after two rounds. India registered their first point at the front but the New Zealand quartet of Selina Goddard, Nicole Tommy, Tayla Bruce and Val Smith took a 6-1 lead after four ends with a margin of five points.

It was the impetus for India to start their comeback, as they collected six points in the next four ends and took a 7-6 lead after eight ends. In the tenth end, India claimed three points to take a 10-7 lead, but New Zealand came back with four rounds to tie the game with their three points at the eleventh end. Two points in the twelfth end saw New Zealand take a 12-10 lead, but the seesaw contest continued with India earning two in the next end to tie the game 12-12.

India trailed 12-13 till the end, but Pinky’s brilliant two throws raised hopes of victory. Saikia chased down an excellent throw, but New Zealand bounced back with a stunner to deprive India of the three nearest balls to the jack.

Tirkey then knocked on New Zealand’s nearest ball to revive hope and ensured a medal with a final throw that earned four points, making it 16–13, thus the first medal for India in Lawn Bowls.
