India Finish 2nd In Pool A In Men’s Hockey At Olympics; Quarterfinal On Sunday

Mumbai: India defeated Japan 5-3 in their final Pool A men’s hockey match at the Tokyo Olympics. It was India’s third straight victory in the event.

India finished second on Pool A points table with 12 points from five matches.

The Men in Blue will next face off in the quarterfinals of the mega event. Japan may have scored three goals, but the Indian boys ensured that the Men in Blue remained ahead throughout the game and dominated the proceedings.

Just two minutes before the end of the third quarter, India earned their second penalty corner and just missed the net. But the Indians were leading by a quarter (3-2).

Both the teams got off to a good start but the Manpreet Singh-led side scored the first goal in the 13th minute. Gurjant Singh then scored early in the second quarter as India doubled the lead over Japan.

However, Japan returned with a goal as soon as Tanaka opened the team’s account. Kota Watanabe equalized in the third quarter, but Shamsher Singh scored in the 34th minute to put India on top again.

At the end of the third essay, India took a 3-2 lead with a thrilling final quarter. In the final quarter, Neelkant Sharma doubled India’s lead after a desperate effort from both sides to find the net.

India’s quarter-final match will take place on Sunday against the third-placed team in Pool B.
