India Pledges $7.5 Million For Cancer Moonshot Initiative at Quad Summit

Mumbai: Affirming India’s commitment to global health, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a $7.5 million contribution to the ‘Quad Cancer Moonshot’ initiative, during the sixth Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware. This groundbreaking initiative, aimed at combating cervical cancer in the Indo-Pacific region, was launched as part of the broader vision of ‘One Earth, One Health.’

During the event, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing the global cancer burden, particularly in the Indo-Pacific. “I am glad that in the Quad, we have decided to jointly face the challenge of cervical cancer,” he stated, extending his congratulations to U.S. President Joe Biden for organizing the critical summit.

Modi outlined India’s proactive measures in cancer care, highlighting the nation’s mass-scale cervical cancer screening program and its ongoing efforts to improve accessibility to healthcare. He also mentioned that India has developed its own cervical cancer vaccine, further reinforcing its leadership in healthcare innovation.

“In cancer care, collaboration is essential for cure. An integrated approach of prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment is necessary to reduce the burden of cancer,” Modi said while expressing India’s willingness to share its expertise and experience with other nations.

India will also contribute 40 million vaccine doses to the Indo-Pacific region under the GAVI and Quad initiatives. These doses, Modi said, “will bring rays of hope to the lives of millions.” He stressed that the Quad’s efforts are not merely for the benefit of individual nations but for the well-being of people across the globe, underscoring the human-centric philosophy driving the initiative.

India’s comprehensive cervical cancer program is part of its broader healthcare vision, which also includes the world’s largest health insurance scheme and dedicated centres for affordable medicines. With the help of AI, new treatment protocols are being developed to further bolster the fight against cancer.

The Quad Cancer Moonshot is poised to make a significant impact in saving lives in the region, bringing together the resources and expertise of the Quad nations—India, the United States, Japan, and Australia—toward the common goal of eradicating cervical cancer.
