India Sends Ready-To-Eat Meals, Water Puriers, Medicines To Myanmar After Earthquake

Mumbai: India has emerged as the first responder after devastating earthquakes struck Myanmar and parts of neighboring Thailand, leaving nearly 700 dead and over a thousand injured. As part of ‘Operation Brahma,’ the Indian Air Force dispatched 15 tonnes of relief material aboard a cargo plane, which landed in Yangon this morning to assist millions of survivors in the neighboring country.

Swift Humanitarian Aid Under ‘Operation Brahma’

Indian authorities emphasized that this was only the first tranche of aid, with more expected to follow. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, stated, “Operation Brahma – India acts as a First Responder to assist the people of Myanmar affected by yesterday’s massive earthquake. Our first tranche of 15 tonnes of relief material, including tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and essential medicines, has landed in Yangon.”

The relief supplies include tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, hygiene kits, solar lamps, generator sets, and essential medical supplies such as Paracetamol, antibiotics, cannulas, syringes, gloves, cotton bandages, and urine bags.

Global Response and Continued Support

Following a rare appeal for international aid from Myanmar’s military government, the United States and several other countries have also pledged support. The series of powerful earthquakes, including the initial 7.7-magnitude tremor, left a trail of destruction, collapsing buildings and displacing thousands. Myanmar’s junta confirmed that approximately 694 people had died, while 1,670 were injured.

Just hours after the earthquake struck, India stepped in with immediate assistance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the situation, assuring that India was ready to extend all possible help. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”

Emergency Declarations and Rescue Efforts

Myanmar declared a state of emergency across its six worst-affected regions. Hundreds of casualties were reported at a major hospital in Naypyidaw, where the emergency department entrance had collapsed on a car. In Thailand, an emergency zone was declared in Bangkok, leading to the suspension of metro and light rail services.

Rescue teams continue to search for survivors under the rubble, while international humanitarian aid plays a crucial role in relief efforts. With India leading the charge in providing immediate assistance, further global support is expected to bolster Myanmar’s recovery from this catastrophic disaster.
