The missile is a joint venture between India and Russia where the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) represents the Indian side.

The missile was test-fired from INS Visakhapatnam which is the latest warship of the recently inducted Indian Navy. BrahMos is the main weapon system of Indian Navy warships and is deployed on almost all its surface platforms.

An underwater version is also being developed which will not only be used by the submarines of India but will also be offered for export to friendly foreign nations.
