India This Year Alone Extended Support Worth $3.5 Billion To Sri Lankan People: Govt

Mumbai: Amid the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, India’s External Affairs Ministry said, “In keeping with our Neighbourhood First policy, India has extended this year alone support worth over $3.5 billion to people of Sri Lanka for helping them overcome their current difficulties.”

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “India will always be guided by the best interests of the people of Sri Lanka expressed through democratic processes.”

He was replying to media queries on developments in Sri Lanka.

“As Sri Lanka’s close neighbour, with historic ties, India fully supports its democracy, stability and economic recovery,” Bagchi said.

“Besides, the people of India have provided assistance to reduce the shortage of essential commodities like food, medicine etc,” he said.

The island nation has been witnessing widespread protests over the past few days. Angry protesters clashed with the police and resorted to violence in Colombo and some other places.

According to a media report on Monday, video footage showed Rajapaksa and his younger brother and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s entire house burning in Medamulana in Hambantota city.
