India To Commemorate The Festival Of Colors- Holi

Mumbai: A Large number of people in the country will today burn ‘Holika’ and initiate the 2-day festival.

Holi which is known as Rangpanchmi is the festival which is celebrated mainly at Braj where Lord Krishna grew up. It showcases the love of Krishna and Radha and so Holi is called a festival of love.

The festival comes up with two days followed with first Holika Dehen in which have born fire near temples or open space.

The first day is known as Chotti Holi or Holika Dehen and the second day is called as Rangwali Holi, Dhuleti, Dulandi or Dhulivandan.

The name Holika is been derived from Holika, the devil. This is a mythological story where Lord Vishnu killed Holika in order to save his devotee Prahlad. On this day, by burning Holika, people burn the devil, sorrows and wish for good deeds.

Couples and singles, children and old have ‘Parikrama’ (to move around the circle), put kumkum, offers food, coconut, herbal Gulal of five colours, Ghee, Tulsi leaves.

On the second day, people make sweet dishes, homemade milk sweets, Gujiya, Malpuas, Bhaang and apply colour on each other body. Whereas small children apply Gulal on elder’s feet and seek blessings.

The festival is celebrated on the day of Purnima (Full moon). This year, Holi had fallen on 20th and 21st March.
